About Gap

“The” Gap was founded in 1969 with a simple idea—make it easier to find a pair of jeans that fit with a commitment to do more. The first store in San Francisco sold only men’s Levis, records and tapes; Levis for women didn’t debut until 1970.

By 1974, Gap was established enough to begin selling its own “Gap Fashion Pioneers” brand in stores, increasing the number of products until Gap was exclusively Gap (Levis were dropped in 1991). The Gap brand went big in the 1980s with its iconic one-pocket tee, sold in a multitude of colors and worn by just about everybody.

By the mid-90s, Gap really hit its stride, creating the Who Wore Khakis ad campaign with vintage black and white photographs showing legends such as Ernest Hemingway and Gene Kelly stylishly wearing khaki pants. The ads were a sensation and made Gap a household name and a go-to brand for well-made clothing basics — like these Long and Lean jeans.
